Our Introduction to Navigation & Orienteering getaway covers foundational principals of ‘finding your way’ in multiple contexts, including map & compass” and the sport of “orienteering”.  Whether you are leading a team in an Adventure Race, canoe tripping in Algonquin Park, going for a hike or cycling in a new trail network, having the confidence, skills and ability to orient yourself, assess route options and follow a planned route is an enabling and empowering skill.

Navigation: Understand the function of magnetic fields, using a map & compass and reading a topographic map, like an Ontario Base Map. Well aligned with the needs of backcountry camping, canoe tripping, bikepacking or emergency evacuation via a direct route.

Orienteering: the focus shifts away from the compass as a main reference to the many other sources of information and a much more detailed map format. Build awareness of your surrounding with skills and methods that are available to support navigation through a variety of terrain. A great introduction before trying the sport of Orienteering.

A key part of the introduction will be working with participants to identify and build confidence in the skills we anticipate they already possess, finding examples in their daily routine that can act as references to taking on new challenges.

The session includes a mix of indoor classroom and outdoor simulation-based learning. It is a great ‘off-season’ getaway option and can include winter or early spring sessions.

Participant of our Intro Navigation and Orienteering Course celebrate finding a control point during an the orienteering simulation.
